One-piece button depicts eagle facing right, surrounded by 13 stars. White metal one-piece button, 18mm of French manufacture with “C F / PARIS” back mark.
The U.S. government ordered 10,000 sets of French chasseur (light infantry) uniforms, adorned with this type of button, in late 1861. General McClellan awarded many of these uniforms to regiments that excelled in drill in 1862. The 62nd and 83rd Pennsylvania, 18th Massachusetts, and 49th and 72nd New York received these uniforms.
This button remains in nice “dug” condition with good detail. [jet] [ph:L]
