This regulation US cartridge box plate was recovered from the camp of the 44th Indiana at Shiloh by Syd Kerksis, one of the legendary early relic hunters and collectors, author of books on military belt plates and Civil War projectiles. The plates comes with Kerksis’s original paper storage envelope bearing his ink notation on the location of the find and the date: June 1962.
The plate is the regulation 1839 pattern oval U.S. cartridge box plate used throughout the Civil War and is in excellent excavated condition with the face showing a smooth brown with just light brown spots along the outer edge of the rim. The letters show only minor light scratches and one small dimple on the right of the “U” and no nicks or dings to the edge. The reverse has a nice smooth surface with only the tiniest flake at upper left, and some brown staining near the two iron wire loops that are in place and intact, though naturally showing some rust.
The 44th Indiana organized at Fort Wayne in October 1861. It took part in the siege and battle of Fort Donelson in February 1862, losing 7 killed, 34 wounded and 2 missing, and was heavily engaged at Shiloh in April, fighting both days, losing 33 killed and 177 wounded out of 478 engaged, and firing 160 rounds per man. They later fought in the siege of Corinth, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge.
This is a regulation Union accoutrement plate is very good condition with great provenance to an early, respected collector and author, and a find location connecting it to specific regiment and one of great battles of the war. [sr][ph:m]
