This is the standard 1839 pattern oval US plate made of die-struck rolled brass with a lead-solder filled back and comes with its collection envelope noted by early relic hunter, collector and author Syd Kerksis as having been found in January 1959 on the battlefield of Second Manassas “S – WTP,” which, from other finds of his on that battlefield, means, “South of the Warrenton Turnpike.”
The face shows as brown with olive tones with whitish gray in scattered small dots overall and concentrated in area at left and right. The rim shows a small ding at right, and a hairline crack at bottom extending into the face below the “U.” The lower curve of the “S” shows a deep, narrow gouge. The reverse shows as a light brown dusting over gray, with cracking to the fill and small losses, but nothing large. The stud hooks are the arrowhead style that became common from 1863 onward. These had been introduced in 1862 by some makers, but the area was well traversed by troops at other times, so it is tough to tell when this was lost. Underneath those studs the plate retains a small portion of the leather belt it once fastened.
serving both as an ornament and to hold down the flap of the cartridge box if left unlatched by the soldier. The face shows as brown with the rim a light, whitish brown mixed with some gray, a few small spots of which appear along the left edge of the “U.” The edge of the rim is very good, showing no dents or dings. The reverse shows gray and brown at center with white oxidation around the perimeter and some brown stains, with the iron wire loops rusty, but intact and in place. The surface of the lead solder fill is level, though it does show two hairlines following the path of the iron wire inside that has likely oxidized somewhat and expanded, but there are no chips or missing pieces to the fill.
