Offered here is a very nice, late-war Union artillery shell. This is an iron, 3” Hotchkiss artillery shell that was intended to be fired from a 10-pounder Parrott rifle or 3” Ordnance rifle. Unfired surplus.
This shell is made up of three separate sections. The nose section would hold the fuse and explosive charge. The middle section, a lead sabot, intended to grab the rifling when fired. The third section is the iron base cup. The bottom of this cup is smooth and shows no signs of the Hotchkiss patent information as seen on earlier versions. This has three flame grooves running up the sides. A small casting flaw is seen on the edge at the bottom.
There is a Wright time fuse in the nose with raised lettering. The threaded center is empty; often an additional Hotchkiss percussion fuse was inserted here to create a combination fuse system.
This shell is an excellent piece and a fine addition to any Civil War artillery collection. [jet][ph:L]

A very attractive example of a scarce plate. O’Donnell and Campbell illustrate this pattern as #472 in their American Military Belt Plates, and Mullinax (1991) notes at least two different die strikes in their production, calling this one, with a… (1287-07). Learn More »
