Three deep flame grooves cut into the shell and the lead sabot allowing the flaming gases to pass and ignite the fuse.  The lead sabot shows the 3-inch Ordnance rifling.  Cutting the flame grooves into the body of the shell greatly weakening it causing the projectile to loose the base cup and sabot.  This shell had some separation, but still intact.  Nice brass Hotchkiss Type II paper time fuse adapter.  Shell was never cleaned, light surface rust.  [ws][ph:L]
