This is a very good example of the quintessential Confederate belt plate, the rectangular CSA. This one has sharp lettering and border, and retains all three hooks on the reverse, bent down slightly and one with the point bent up and back, but no bends, cracks, or breaks. The surface shows a mix of light and dark brown with some gray in recesses of the letters and near the raised edge on the face, with light and dark brown on the reverse. The hooks are well pointed and the pattern fits the general Atlanta Arsenal style, which has many variants, showing a comparatively thick border and small periods following the letters.
This was recovered at Resaca, GA, fought from May 13 through May 15, with as part of the 1864 Atlanta Campaign as Sherman pushed and maneuvered Johnston’s forces back upon that city, keeping him from reinforcing Lee. Johnston had fallen back to Resaca when flanked out of his positions at Dalton and there were unsuccessful attacks by both sides on May 14-15, before Sherman’s troops pushed across the Oostanaula River on Johnston’s left and rear, forcing him to pull back once more, all at estimated cost of some 5,500 to 7,000 men from both sides.
