VERY NICE RICHMOND STYLE CS TWO-PIECE SWORD BELT PLATE: LONGSTREET’S CAMP AT FREDERICKSBURG

$2,975.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1262-04

This was recovered in 1977 from a camp in the Fredericksburg area known to have been occupied by Longstreet’s troops. It is in excellent condition, with no bends, cracks or breaks, and a fairly even, light, olive green patina, matching on both the tongue and wreath, with a little brown mixed in on the reverse of both parts. The belt loops have crisp bevels. The wreath has good detail with the crossed ribbons distinguishable at the top and bottom. The disk has a nicely defined, narrow raised border and the crisp, tall, somewhat narrow CS letters are very well defined with straight serifs at the top of both letters, and a straight and wider serif on the bottom of the S. The wreath portion has a well defined gutter on the reverse and shows the round mark of an air vent on the bar. On the tongue the bar has a nice step up from the disk on the reverse. For parallel examples see Mullinax (1991) Plate 001ff.

This is a classic Confederate  sword belt plate, complete, with tongue and wreath matching, in excellent condition, eye appeal and with a great connection to the Army of Northern Virginia.  [sr][ph:L]
