This Federal cartridge box plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was recovered from a very significant location at Spotsylvania, Virginia in April 1954. Plate is in very fine excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the oval brass accoutrement’s face has a central “US”. Face is very well preserved and has acquired a handsome smooth, dark brown patina. The lead back has oxidized over onto the front rim around the edges slightly. The lead filled back retains 100% of lead fill. A “W.H. SMITH / BROOKLYN” maker’s marking is present. Both iron hooks are rusted but strong and present. One “rust bubble” has raised in the middle of the maker’s stamp.

Recovered by Sid Kerksis and comes with the envelope he stored the relic in. Envelope marked, “Spotsylvania / Apr 54 / US Ctg box / plate marked / “W H Smith, / Brooklyn / Found in Confederate / trench. Base of / mule shoe salient”.  Mr. Sydney C. Kerksis was a legendary early Civil War relic hunter and the author of “Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874”.

This highly pleasing, original brass U.S. cartridge box plate would be fine addition to any military belt plate display or Civil War collection.   [jet] [ph:L]
