This Federal eagle breast plate is of the regulation 1826 pattern and was recovered from Cedar Mountain, Virginia in October 1957. Plate measures 64mm in diameter and is in very good excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face has a spread-winged eagle looking to his left while holding three arrows in this right talon and an olive branch in his left. Face is well preserved and has acquired a handsome dark brown patina. The lead back has oxidized over onto the front rim around the edges. There is one ding on the body of the eagle and may be a shovel ding caused by Sid. The lead filled back retains 99.9% of lead fill. No maker’s markings. Both iron hooks are rusted but strong and present.

Recovered by Sid Kerksis and comes with the envelope he stored the relic in. Envelope marked, “Cedar Mtn / Oct 57 / EP / edge of wheat field”.  Mr. Sydney C. Kerksis was a legendary early Civil War relic hunter and the author of “Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874”.

This highly pleasing, original brass U.S. eagle breast plate would be fine addition to any military belt plate display or Civil War collection.   [jet] [ph:L]
