This was a very popular early-war Confederate belt plate using a simple construction going back to some militia plate of the 1830-1850 period using a simple sheet brass plate with a tongue and belt loop bar soldered to the reverse. This is a nice excavated example showing no bends or breaks, good edges and a nice surface showing significant amounts of reddish brown brass showing through a tannish brown on the face, with the reverse showing smaller amounts of the red, but clearly showing the bases of the soldered belt hook and belt loop bar.
For details on these widely used plates, often supplied by local contractors if not brought in from pre-war militia, see Keim, Confederate General Service Accoutrement Plates, Figure 144 and following. This is a very nice example and measures 58 X 80 mm. [SR][ph:L]
