A scarce Confederate carbine sling buckle with single tongue. A good example of Confederate conservation of resources and simplified production. This uses a flat brass frame with raised center bar and a single tongue of flat, wide brass simply bent around it. These show up with both double tongues, like the federal version, and single tongues, like this that saved some work and some brass and still got the job done. It measures 1-1/2” wide and 2-3/4” tall, the same as most of its double-tongue compatriots, and would take a belt a tad under 2” wide. For comparable examples see Keim, Figures 512-525 for double tongue versions and Figure 534 among his non-descript plates, which he classes as either a waist belt or carbine sling buckle. On this one the wide, flat brass tongue seems the determining factor, typical of those on carbine sling buckles, both US and CS- see Keim’s Figures 512-514, and 517-518 in particular. This has a good reddish-brown color with some bluish-green verdigris. The slots are cut a tad uneven, which has pleasing Confederate look, and the center bar has a slight bow from the weight of the carbine. The top edge of one slot shows slight nick and a line beneath it that may indicate a crack or casting flaw, but there is no separation and the buckle is stable.  [sr][PH:L]
