The crossed-cannon insignia for artillerymen was introduced in the US army in 1834 and shows up in a number of variations including changes in made in the Army in 1851 and 1858 along with a wide variety of state and privately purchased variations. This is the standard form issued to US Army enlisted men starting in 1858, about 3” wide, made of stamped rolled brass, showing the barrel trunnions, astragals and fillets, cascabel knob, etc. This was recovered at Fredericksburg, has a mixed light green and brown patina front and back, and some losses and breaks as shown, but displays well. The fastening loops are missing, as they usually are from excavated examples. This was repaired and stabilized with some glue and a couple of stiffeners in the hollow back. For details on the introduction, use, and variations of this insignia see, in particular, the relevant chapter in Campbell and O’Donnell, American Military Headgear Insignia. [sr][ph:L]
