The crossed-cannon insignia for artillerymen was introduced in the US army in 1834 and shows up in a number of variations including changes in made in the Army in 1851 and 1858 along with a wide variety of state and privately purchased variations. This one was recovered at Fredericksburg and is the slightly narrower version, measuring 1-1/2” wide, the type often seen on the front of caps and commercially purchased by officers for field wear. sometimes seen on the fronts of forage caps. This has a deep brown patina on the exterior, and a lighter gray-brown inside, with losses as shown. The back had some glue applied to keep it intact since these hat insignia were made without the lead-solder fill used on accoutrement plates. For details on the introduction, use, and variations of this insignia see, in particular, the relevant chapter in Campbell and O’Donnell, American Military Headgear Insignia. [sr][ph:L]
