A very telling little piece of soldier’s camp art- a small finger ring fashioned from a lead bullet into a ring with a heart on it. This was clearly a work in progress when it was lost or abandoned by its maker. The band is still roughly formed and the ends overlap but do not mesh on one side. The heart, however, is very well formed and finished, and clearly the focus of the maker. Needless to say, there was a lot of lead around a military camp to fashion trinkets and keepsakes from, but the alteration of a potentially lethal bullet intended for one’s enemies into a token of love for a wife or sweetheart at home is rather affecting and makes one wonder about the fate of its soldier creator.
