This is crudely cast from lead and measures 1-1/4” tall. It is good example of Civil War soldiers’ camp art, making use of lead that was readily available and easily melted to make a crude company letter just a tad taller than the stamped-brass one-inch prescribed by US regulations but which might vary somewhat. This was recovered at Fredericksburg and given that US brass hat insignia was readily available one could make a case for it being a Confederate imitation. It is tan and brown in color, and having no pins or points of attachment, must have been intended to be sewn in place.  [sr] [ph:L]
