In 1967 “plastics” may have been the confidential word of advice to a new college graduate, but in 1851 it was “India Rubber,” “Gutta-Percha,” or simply “Vulcanized.” This two-holed button measures 13/16” in diameter and bears the “N.R. Co.” marking of the Novelty Rubber Company in raised letters in the channel, along with “GOODYEAR’S P T 1851,” a maker and marking associated with, among other things the black hard rubber buttons of Berdan’s and other sharpshooter units. This is field recovery found at Fredericksburg, but is in excellent condition. [sr] [ph:L]
