This plate comes with its original collection envelope with notations on its provenance by Syd Kerksis, noted early collector and author. Pickett’s Mill was fought on May 27, 1864, in the Atlanta Campaign as Sherman attempted to move around Gen. Johnston’s right after being stymied at New Hope Church, but resulted in another Confederate defensive victory, with Federal losses estimated at 1,400 to 1,600, with a high proportion of killed to wounded, and Confederate losses at about 500. The 15th Corps was part of McPherson’s Army of the Tennessee and was posted on the right of the Union line.

The plate is the regulation M1826 shoulder belt plate that was originally used on bayonet shoulder belts and after the bayonet was shifted to the waistbelt became static plates worn on the cartridge box belt, fitted with two loops on the back, with the adjustable plates reserved for the shoulder belts carrying swords worn by sergeants and musicians.

This is a strong example with crisp details to the eagle and rim, a good edge, and even, medium brown patina with just a little, thin, light brown at lower left near the tips of the arrows held by the eagle. The reverse has a full lead-solder fill showing medium gray with shallow areas of corrosion showing as light gray with the two single iron wire prongs rusted away but the doubled-wire hook showing rust, but still in place.

These are relatively scarce plates. This one has a great provenance to a prominent author and collector and was recovered at one of the battle sites of a decisive western campaign.   [sr][ph:L]
