An impressive brass boiler maker’s name plate from the steam boiler of the USS Kearsarge. Nicely mounted on a wood plaque and reading “E. KEELER CO. /WILLIAMSPORT. PA. / WATER TUBE BOILER / ESTABLISHED 1864.” With this is the original item description/bill of sale on company letterhead from Francis Bannerman reading: Brass Boiler nameplate from the U.S.S. Kearsarge, wrecked on Roncadon Reef while en route to Nicaragua in 1894. The original boiler was replaced in 1864-1865 during repairs made after the battle with the C.S.S. Alabama. Purchased from the captian [sic- clearly a typo for “captain”] of the wreckers. Valuable Relic Price $25.00

Francis Bannerman will be a familiar figure to any collector of antique militaria and weapons- he was the grandfather of the mail-order military relics business with an open salesroom/museum operation in New York City and is perhaps best known for the castle he erected on an island in the Hudson. The Kearsarge, a steam sloop of war launched in September 1861 and commissioned in January 1862, is best known for its victory over the CSS Alabama off Cherbourg in June 1864, which put an end to that Confederate commerce raider. The Kearsarge was in Boston for repairs from November 26, 1864, to April 1, 1865, corresponding to the date of the new boiler given along with maker’s plaque. The ship saw a good deal of postwar service with brief periods during which it was decommissioned. As the sales document notes, the ship was wrecked on the Roncado Cay in February 1894, while sailing from Haiti to Nicaragua. A salvage team hired by the U.S. government determined the ship could not be refloated. Some items salvaged from the wreck went to the government, but others like this maker’s plate made their way into private hands. Among his vast offerings of goods for sale he also listed books from the vessel’s library.  [sr][ph:L]

SCARCE NEW MODEL 1865 SHARPS STILL IN PERCUSSION NEAR FACTORY NEW

There are no appreciable differences between the NM1863 and NM1865 Sharps other than the stamped model designation by the company, and its occasional absence, which some have speculated was due to worn out or broken old dies, or was a marketing ploy… (490-2531). Learn More »
