Offered here is an early “battlefield pick-up” relic that was part of the collections on display at the York, PA, #37 “General Sedgwick” Grand Army of the Republic Post.
The item is the iron base cup portion of a 3.8” Hotchkiss artillery shell made for the 14-pounder James rifle. The actual diameter of this piece is approximately 3.74”.
As this is no doubt a very early battlefield pick-up by a veteran, there are only a few scattered spots of light surface rust. The iron exhibits a dark brown/black tone overall. Some of the Hotchkiss patent imprint remains readable on the bottom. A paper label is pasted to the side with “Richmond, Va” written in brown ink.
After the war, several posts of the Grand Army of the Republic, the leading veterans’ organization for ex-Union soldiers, were named in memory of General Sedgwick. They included Post #4 in Keene, New Hampshire; Post #12 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Post #17 in Santa Ana, California; and Post #37 in York, Pennsylvania.
A fine veteran’s post relic. [jet][ph:L]
