Regulation US 1839 pattern plate for the cartridge box- die struck rolled brass with raised US and rim, lead solder filled back to anchor iron wire loops for attachment to the cartridge box, the fill to add stiffness to the plate, and weight to help keep the box flap down if unlatched. Well defined letters and rim. One scratch to the “S” at the middle, and just above in upper loop of the letter. Good, coppery brown tone to the brass, with a little gray on the rim. The iron wire loops are there, though rusted and one is bent. The lead-solder fill shows gray and white with brown stains. No significant losses to the fill, though we do see some short hairline cracks at center. The right side of an “E. GAYLORD” maker’s stamp is legible at center.

This was recovered at Fredericksburg, which will be familiar to any student of the war, being the site of a costly federal defeat for Burnside in December1862, and significant, though ultimately indecisive, fighting in May 1863 as Hooker tried to get Sedgwick and other subordinates to get him out of the mess he had created upriver at Chancellorsville. Emerson Gaylord will be familiar to students of Civil War material culture: he was one of the major suppliers of accoutrements to the US army. This is a good example of his work and from a very significant battlefield and a basic Union army accoutrement plate necessary to any collection.  [sr][ph:m/L]
