Cluster of very old Chinese coins from a Song Dynasty shipwreck. Recovered from a Chinese vessel that sank in the South China sea. A certificate of authenticity that comes with the coins from previous seller dates these to the 1500s while also stating the “study [of Chinese coins] is admittedly out of our area”. After some further research, we find similar specimens dating as far back as the Song Dynasty (1127-1279 AD).
Cluster consists of three stacks of coins encrusted in seafloor concretion. Coin faces are clearly visible on top and bottom of stacks. Measures 3.25” long, 1.25” wide, 0.75” tall (at tallest stack).
