This item is an excavated U.S. cartridge box plate for the outer flap of the infantry cartridge pouch. Stamped brass face boldly displays “US” in the center. Nice mixed brown/green patina on face. Lead filled with no loops on back. Back is covered with green felt with recovery information noted.

This comes from the Gregory A. Coco collection. He recovered this in 1978 at Bovine Station, Mississippi, just east of Vicksburg in a supply area.

Gregory A. Coco was born in Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana in 1946. He served in Vietnam and was a Park Ranger at Gettysburg NMP for many years. Greg enjoyed historical research and authored many books relating to the Battle of Gettysburg, most notably “A Vast Sea of Misery” and “A Strange and Blighted Land”.
