This item is an original fine-tooth, double-sided comb also known as a mustache, fine, or lice comb. Used by soldiers for cleaning and grooming. Well documented in many, many references. There are several documented makers of this comb during the period utilizing Goodyears 1851 patent. The most commonly found examples from the Civil War and pre-CW era is the India Rubber Comb Company which operated from 1856 to near the turn of the century.
This piece measures 2.75” x 1.6” with 0.45” long teeth. This is marked “I.R. Comb Co. Goodyear 1851”. All but a few teeth remain intact. Nice black color. Recovered from trash pit in Fredericksburg, VA. [jet][ph:L]
