This is the complete lead sabot from a fired 3” Hotchkiss artillery shell. The Hotchkiss pattern projectile was composed of three separate pieces. The lead sabot was fitted in the middle between the explosive iron nose section and an iron base cup. This sabot is from a fired shell and shows the rifling marks of the cannon barrel. A common problem of the Hotchkiss was that the pieces separated after being fired and could fall short among friendly troops.
Greg’s note attached to this item states that it was acquired in 1999, and originally from the A.M. Lemoine collection. He believes it could have been recovered from Mansura, Yellow Bayou, or Fort DeRussy.
This comes from the Gregory A. Coco collection. Greg was born in Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana in 1946. He served in Vietnam and was a Park Ranger at Gettysburg NMP for many years. Greg enjoyed historical research and authored many books relating to the Battle of Gettysburg, most notably “A Vast Sea of Misery” and “A Strange and Blighted Land”. [jet][ph:L]
