Offered here is a display related to the history of copper. Case measures 8.25” x 12.25”.
Printed labels provide the history of the element and its use through history. Included are a chunk of naturally occurring copper, two early copper coins (one Roman, one English), and two Central Mining Company notes.
The $5 and $10 notes are dated 1864. This is privately issued currency from the Central Mining Company which was formed in 1854 to mine copper in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. The company continued operations there until 1898. Michigan produced more copper than any other state in the Union for most of the latter half of the nineteenth century. In 1864, the company had 240 employees, including 146 miners, 28 mechanics and engineers, and 64 laborers.
