This Federal belt plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was recovered at Winchester. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a clear “US” with a fine dark green patina. There is a small repair along the lower edge where Stan must have hit it with his shovel. The repair is more visible from the back than the front. Lead filled back retains most of lead fill. There are some fine freeze cracks around the edge, and there is the repair. No maker’s mark. This is the style with “puppy-paw” hooks; all three hooks remain. A nice relic in “dug” condition.
Adhesive label on back with notation by early battlefield relic hunter and author, Stan Phillips, “WSTAN PHILLIPS / WINCHESTER #5 / 10-4-75”. [jet][ph:L]
