The Battle of Marton Moor occurred on July 2, 1644, and was a decisive Parliamentarian victory during the English Civil War, fought near York. Parliamentarian forces, including Scottish allies, defeated the Royalists led by Prince Rupert of the Rhine, ending Royalist power in the north of England. Key figures included Oliver Cromwell, who led a crucial cavalry counterattack. The battle was fought during a siege of York. Prince Rupert's army marched to relieve the city, while the Parliamentarian forces, including the Scottish army, moved to intercept him and won a decisive victory. The Royalists suffered an estimated 4,000 dead and 1,500 captured, while Parliamentarian losses were much lower. [jet] [ph:jet]
