This is a complete, but run over, Civil War canteen. Called the “bullseye” pattern due to the concentric rings on the body. The body is complete and all three strap brackets remain attached. It is, however, smashed and appears to have been run over or at least stepped on. The pewter spout and stopper pull ring are included as these were all recovered together. The piece remains rusty and untreated, but stable.
Recovered at Brandy Station, Virginia, on the Brandy Rock Farm during DIV (Diggin’ In Virginia) #5 by author/publisher Dean Thomas. This was the first signal he found just minutes after the hunt was started and just yards from the “headquarters” tent. [jet][ph:L]
