This is a 12-pounder cannon ball recovered at Antietam. This was a “ground burst” meaning the ball was fired and when it struck, it became buried in the ground before it burst, leaving all fragments in close proximity.
A relic hunter recovered all the iron fragments and was able to reassemble the ball…minus the fuse which was not found. The iron is pitted but had been well cleaned in order to be able to put the puzzle back together. The threads in the fuse hole and under plug hole remain visible.
An interesting Antietam relic. [jet][ph:L]
