This big bullet is a Northern arsenal-made bullet. Literally “pressed and turned” on a bullet machine where a slug of lead was cut, pressed in a die to form the nose and cavity, then turned on a lathe to shape the body.

In an early bullet reference book (Projectiles II by McKee & Mason) these were named “Prussian” bullets. While they could have been used in Prussian imported muskets, they were not specifically intended for them, being manufactured in Northern arsenals for use in any and all .69 caliber rifled muskets.

This specimen has no lubricant grooves on the body and is the least common of the many varieties of this type of bullet; others having two or three grooves. A thin, slightly raised ring around the nose marks where the nose portion of the die held the bullet during the lathe process. Bullet wears a nice white patina with a few light striations of gray.

Reference: T&T #188A; M&M # 211.  A very good specimen with nice white patina.  [jet][ph:jet]
