This bayonet was excavated in North America in the 19th century. It was designed to fit a "Brown Bess" type long arm. However, the size, about 10% smaller all around, indicates it was designed for a light infantry musket (carbine) of the circa 1760 types rather than a battalion or line infantry Brown Bess musket. The regulation battalion Brown Bess musket had a .75 to .78 caliber bore, but this bayonet with its 4-inch socket would accommodate a weapon with a bore of .65 to .68 caliber. Also, the blade on this bayonet is 16 inches long rather than 17-inch length for the "musket bore" Brown Bess. The deep rich patina is a pleasure to behold, and it is in pristine condition for a ground recovery. [pe][ph:L]
