This “dug” Federal cartridge box plate is of the regulation 1839. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a clear “US” with nice smooth face and dark brown patina. Retains majority of lead fill with soldier’s carving; no maker’s mark. The two wire loops remain intact. Measures approximately 85mm x 55mm.
There is extensive soldier carving into the lead back. There are a series of thick cuts, and many very fine lines. There is a large “X” in the center, which some have construed as the St. Andrew’s Cross of a carved Confederate battle flag. That decision is up to the potential buyer.
Reported to have been recovered around Chancellorsville, VA. In very fine, “relic” condition, typical of relics recovered in the 1970s or earlier. [jet][ph:L]
