Offered here is an interesting relic recovered out of the river at City Point, VA.
Leather belt measures approximately 35” long x 1.75” wide. Many well-used holes from when a belt plate was attached; no belt plate included.
Leather shows tooled edge and remains in surprisingly good condition considering its recovery location.
City Point served as General Ulysses S. Grant’s vital supply base and headquarters during the 1864–1865 Siege of Petersburg. During the Siege of Petersburg, City Point was one of the world's busiest ports, supplying nearly 100,000 Union troops with food, ammunition, and 65,000 horses/mules. On August 9, 1864, the Union supply depot at there was devastated by a massive explosion. Initially attributed to the careless handling of ammunition, it was later revealed to be an act of Confederate sabotage. This belt and many other relics were recovered from the river decades ago.
