This is an excavated specimen and this common size was for the 3” Ordnance rifle. This is the nose portion of the 3-piece Hotchkiss artillery shell. No lead sabot or iron base cup.

The copper fuse adaptor is present. The shell exhibits the 3 flame grooves on the sides. Iron is rusty and pitted.  Drilled through the bottom to flush out powder charge, making this safe.

Recovered in Louisiana.  This comes from the Gregory A. Coco collection. Greg was born in Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana in 1946. He served in Vietnam and was a Park Ranger at Gettysburg NMP for many years. Greg enjoyed historical research and authored many books relating to the Battle of Gettysburg, most notably “A Vast Sea of Misery” and “A Strange and Blighted Land”.     [jet][ph:L]
