This is a relic condition U.S. waist belt plate. This is the regulation 1839 pattern plate used throughout the war and bears the marking on the back of W.H. Smith of Brooklyn, a major supplier of these plates to the Union army.
Face shows large “US” on brass face. With mostly green patina along with a number of “dings” and “scrapes” this was most likely recovered from a cultivated field. There is probably a little more than 90% of the lead fill remaining with “puppy-paw” style hooks in place. Maker’s stamp in the lead, “W.H. SMITH / BROOKLYN”. More plow or digger “dings” in the lead on back.
Still a very displayable belt plate. [jet][ph:L]
