This Model 1835/42 Bayonet and P1859 Scabbard were part of the relic collections in G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) Post #551. This was the Peter Miller Post in York Springs, Pennsylvania. Named after Private Peter Miller of Company K, 30th PA Infantry who was killed in action at South Mountain, MD, on September 14, 1862.
The bayonet itself is complete and semi bright except for the socket, which has been exposed to moisture and left in an oxidized state. It is fitted aggressively in the scabbard, which is heavily crazed with drying-related splits at the frog (not attached) and belt loop as shown (along stitched seams). A slight break in the seam near the finial is noted. Finial is still firmly attached by both pins and exhibits a tarnished patina.
An interesting relic that was obviously held in high regard by the members of Post #551. [cm][ph:L]
