Manufactured at the Marshall Arsenal, Marshall, Texas. The design utilized many features from the Federal Schenkl style, but is a unique CS design. The Confederates replaced the paper sleeve from the Federal design with a wooden sleeve, fitted over the bottom ribbed section. It is unknown if the confederacy could not fabricate the paper sabot, like the US version, or if they thought the wood sabot was superior. This shell design also had a stud fitted onto the bottom like captured and reused US Schenkls’. This may have been an attempt to secure the sabot.

It is not entirely clear what gun this was intended for but, possibly the Federal 6-pounder James rifling converted cannons. Measurements of the CS Schenkl vary in diameter, with this bolt being 3.67 inches. It stands 8 ¾ inches tall and weighs in at 12 pounds 3 ounces. The Confederates did not copy the finely casted James Patent “birdcage”14 pounder. This is the likely replacement for that intended caliber. Which also means that these were made for captured guns, or soon expected to be. Due either to poor performance, or a shortage of suitable guns, production of this pattern was extremely limited. The wood sabot is missing and a round hole from the bottom stud plate is visible. The surface fairly pitted with some of the ribs being distorted. Sealed with a clear finish and no active rust. Recovery location listed as Provencal, Louisiana, where an unfired cache was previously located. A rare CS shell from a Texas Arsenal.  [stp][ph:L]
