A US horseman’s saber excavated on private property with the owner’s permission in the area of Fort Niagara, which saw extensive activity in the War of 1812, particularly in 1813 but, given the long border with Canada, remained a critical, strategic area. Measuring 40-1/2” overall, this has a 35” blade. In form this resembles both the Starr 1798 contract saber and the W. Rose & Sons contract saber of 1807. The absence of a ferrule on the grip suggests Starr, but there are no visible markings. The sword is full length, in excavated condition with deep pitting and crusty brown surface, with the heaviest corrosion toward the tip and on the hilt. The blade edge is rough, as shown and has a deep notch near the tip. The quillon has slight backward bend, and the backstrap has a slight wave to it, but the elements are fully intact and secure.

Strategically situated at the mouth of the Niagara River, the fort controlled access to the Great Lakes and routes west. The fort was taken from the French by the British in the French and Indian War, and handed over, somewhat belatedly in 1796 to the US by the British, who constructed a corresponding fortress, Ft. George, across the river on Canadian soil. The two posts traded fire in the War of 1812, with Fort Niagara supporting the capture of the British fort in May 1813, but then being taken in turn by the British that December after US troops pulled back, remaining in British hands to the end of the war. Needless to say, cavalry was essential scouting, reconnaissance and, in patrolling the border, in all these operations. In addition to the US Light Dragoon, there were numerous state cavalry units during the war, with companies from New York such as Joel Lee’s Company of Niagara County Cavalry, the Rochester Dragoons, the Cayuga County company of the 8th Regiment, out of Auburn, NY, among others.   [sr][ph:L]
