This is an excavated relic. Iron socket-style bayonet is rusty and pitted but very solid and stable. The very tip of the blade is broken off and the rest was bent into a hook shape. The socket is broken with a missing piece. A paper label with typed note reads, “Bayonet from the Battlefield of Corinth, Miss.”
These are undoubtedly soldier-made pot hooks. However, the ghoulish fascination with them having been used to drag decomposing bodies around will never die (pun intended).
A fine relic bayonet made into a hook. [jet][ph:L]
