Sometimes called a Read-Parrott, this artillery round for the 10-pdr Parrott Rifle has been sectioned to show its inner construction. In the nose, part of the Parrott zinc fuzeplug for a paper time fuze has been preserved at left, showing how it was screwed into place. The detonating charge and interior elements were removed to deactivate it, but the interior wall shows remnants of the black pitch used to fill it and, in case shot, used to keep in place the smaller shot that would scatter along with the shell fragments when the time fuze, ignited by the propellant charge when fired, set off the main detonating charge in the center of the chamber.

Visible also is the cast iron ring sabot inserted around the circumference of the shell’s bottom to expand when fired and take the rifling of the cannon barrel, imparting a spin to the round, increasing its range and accuracy. Needless to say, it took a good deal of nerve and discipline on the part of the gun crew to estimate the range and how short to cut the fuze when under fire. Case shot was the preferred projectile against infantry at a distance, the goal being to have the round detonate over and somewhat in front of the intended target.

This round was clearly fired, but failed to detonate and was later excavated. The nose shows some chipping from impact and the sabot ring shows some distortion from firing. The exterior was painted black to inhibit further corrosion and shows just shallow and relatively even pitting underneath. It is a good example of a widely used shell and an educational addition to any artillery display.  [sr] [ph:L]
