Offered here is a case of Civil War relics recovered at Todd’s Tavern, Virginia.
As the fighting in the Wilderness ended, Grant continued his move towards Richmond. Lee hoped to block Grant by shifting the Army of Northern Virginia southward towards Spotsylvania Court House. Lee assigned the job of slowing down the Union columns to General J.E.B Stuart. Likewise, Grant ordered his cavalry chief, General Philip Sheridan, to cut the route the Confederates would take to Spotsylvania. On May 7, the two opposing cavalries met at Todd's Tavern and battled until after dark with fighting resuming the next morning. The infantry followed. It was an inconclusive struggle, but the Confederates did get to Spotsylvania first.
Included here is a M1826 US eagle breast plate (no hooks remaining), seven fired bullets, two brass knapsack studs, and two grommets. Recovered by Horse Soldier employee Jim Thomas. [jet][ph:L]
