This is a very good example recovered at Spotsylvania in 1968 that retains its original Confederate copper band sabot at its base and time-fuze adapter in its nose. Attractive painted recovery information on the shell also notes that has been unloaded. This is the “bourrelated” Read pattern using a raised ring at the shoulder and the base that obviated the need to machine the entire length of the shell to narrow tolerances while on the lathe. The underside of the base shows the expected lathe dimple from the turning.
The body of the shell is a medium brown, showing just even, typical shallow corrosion, a few shallow dings and a rub or two showing as a slightly lighter brown. The fuze adapter, used with a paper time fuze, has a mellow, aged brass patina with some smaller darker spots and has both a crisp hole for the fuze and the two small holes for the spanner wrench used to screw the plug into place or remove it. The copper ring sabot is also in place at the base, its olive brown tone nicely fitting the color of the shell. It shows just a few shallow dings or indentations, along its upper and lower edge, but no significant losses or distortions and preserves the “Read safety groove” above it that allowed for some movement of the ring when it expanded in firing that might otherwise chip the base of the shell.
Please see our photos and consult Melton & Pawl, and Dickey & George, among other sources, for further information on Read projectiles, their manufacturers, types, and variations. This displays very well and merits a place in any CS ordnance collection. [sr][ph:L]
