A superb example of an original U.S. 24-pounder case shot artillery shell, professionally sectioned to reveal the interior construction. The cast iron body retains excellent definition, displaying the characteristic thick outer wall and the original matrix material — a mixture of resin/sulfur binder — in which the sub-projectiles are embedded. Approximately 18–20 iron balls remain clearly visible and in place within the matrix, providing an outstanding visual illustration of how case shot functioned as an anti-personnel round. The fuse aperture at the crown is intact and well-defined. Shell half displays upright showing the full cross-section.

Case shot of this caliber was employed by both Union and Confederate forces from siege artillery and heavy field guns throughout the war. Sectioned examples are highly sought by collectors and institutions for their educational and display value, as they bring to life the internal mechanics of period artillery ordnance in a way no intact shell can.

White chalk identification lettering reading "U.S. 24 lb Case Shot" present on outer wall — likely applied by a previous collector or museum.

Condition: Good to very good relic condition. Expected surface oxidation and pitting consistent with age and recovery. Matrix material firm and intact. Sub-projectiles stable in place.    [ss][ph:L]
