A U.S. Contract flintlock of the Model 1808 pattern, period-altered to carbine length, with a recovery history in the Lake George region of New York. The arm retains its iron side plate, trigger guard, and buttplate, along with its trigger and ramrod. The frizzen is present and rests in the down (firing) position; the cock (hammer) is absent. The stock retains a substantial portion of its original wood — an uncommon survival in a working-life arm of this period and recovery type.
It was likely lost by a soldier during the War of 1812, or may reflect Native American use in the Adirondack Mountains. These associations are traditional to the arm and are offered as collector history rather than documented fact.
CONDITION: Untouched as recovered. Cock (hammer) absent; frizzen present and in the down position. Trigger, ramrod, iron side plate, trigger guard, and buttplate all present. Stock retains much of its original wood.
PROVENANCE: Ex-George Green Collection, Saratoga, New York (1970s).
DIMENSIONS: 44 inches overall. [ss][ph:L]
