Offered here is a group of six “dug” buttons, recovered on private property near Fort Erie, Fort Niagara, and Fort George.

Included are buttons from the British 26th Regiment of Foot, 41st Regiment of Foot, Royal Artillery, an unidentified button with crown, Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencible Infantry, and the Lower Canada Voyageurs Militia.

All buttons show wear to the faces, some worse than others. No shanks remain. Recovered long ago, these were mounted to a “relic board” and at some point removed, leaving snipped copper wire and a drop of solder on the back of each. This is unfortunate, but the faces are basically fine for display.

The 26th Regiment of Foot (The Cameronians), served in Canada in post-war garrison duty along the border. British 41st Regiment of Foot are most notably recognized for their role in the War of 1812 and the defense of Upper Canada under Major-General Sir Isaac Brock. In 1812, the Royal Artillery in Canada defended the Canadian border from American forces; scattered thinly from Quebec to the Great Lakes. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencible Infantry, was raised in 1803 for service in the War of 1812. Lower Canada Militia comprised the Sedentary and Select Embodied Militia, this force was instrumental in halting American advances (such as at the Battle of the Châteauguay).

A fine selection of British and Canadian War of 1812 buttons.  [jet][ph:L]
