These “eagle plates” were introduced in 1826 for use on the bayonet shoulder belt. When the bayonet was switched to wear on the waistbelt in the early 1840s these plates with three wire hooks were relegated for use on the shoulder belts for the 1840 pattern non-commissioned officer and musician swords.

This is a nice excavated example of the Civil War NCO plate. The “nubs” of the three iron-wire hooks is all that remains on the reverse, held in place by a lead solder fill. There is some wear overall with expected light dings. The face retains great detail and has a nice chocolate brown patina with a little dirt still in the recesses. The solder fill is nice and level with a little edge corrosion.

Of special interest are the letters “MVM” that were “tapped” into the top face of the plate denoting a Massachusetts Volunteer Militia regiment. O’Donnell and Campbell note that although obsolete by U.S. standards by 1857, several states, including Massachusetts ordered them as late as 1862. Other letters, possibly soldier’s initials, are found “tapped” into the lead back.

Additionally, the brass face shows a few small dents, at least one of which appears to be from being struck by buckshot. A very interesting plate.

Unknown recovery location.  [jet][ph:L]
