Sometimes nicknamed the T-tool, these British combination gun tools for the Enfield rifle musket do not seem to have been imported in bulk, but are excavated “with some frequency” and were likely shipped over at the rate of one per case of twenty rifles. They seem, however, to have been widely used over here and likely not only by sergeants, a practice of the British army, who apparently believed privates should not be entrusted with too many means to take apart their guns.

This is an interesting relic, as the cross bar was screwed into the threaded end of the ball screw on the lower end of the main piece. In relic condition but still complete with screwdriver, ball puller, partial vent pick, and a mainspring clamp on the side, which was omitted on the tools issued to British privates. The metal is pitted but was cleaned down to base metal leaving no flakey rust. Recovered from Cold Harbor, Va.  [jet] [ph:L]
