Untouched, very good example of Revolutionary War to War of 1812 period bar shot. Made of iron, about 8-1/2” long with swelled ends roughly 3.4” in diameter, this weighs in at 8 lbs 6 oz, identifying it by size and weight as for a 9-pounder muzzle-loading cannon. The surface is a uniform crusty brown, with no breaks or fractures.

Nine-pounder cannon were common in naval contexts, especially for bow or stern guns and saw particular use on smaller vessels such as were employed on the lakes. Bar shot was specifically intended for naval use, the idea being that although, or perhaps because, it was unsteady in flight, the shot would be ideal in shredding canvas sails and tearing apart rope rigging on enemy ships, making them uncontrollable if not completely immobilizing them. It likely took a good deal of discipline and self-control on the part of the gun crew, being less satisfying than aiming at an enemy gun crew making ready to fire or the chance of putting a hole in an opposing vessel’s hull, but made a good deal of sense in the long run.

This comes from a New York longtime collector who has been actively gathering material since the 1960s and who noted this came from the area of Lake Champlain, an active battleground for American and British vessels in both the Revolution and War of 1812. If you want a real relic from this era and this area, and not one from the “collection” of a fictitious college professor, such as flooded the market some years ago with bogus provenances, this could be for you.  [sr][ph:L]
