A short, sawn plank of wood with an embedded Minie ball with a clear, old handwritten ink label glued to it reading, “This Minnie Ball was shot in / to this tree During the War from 1861 to 1865 / Georgia Pine.” This pretty clearly had been discovered at a sawmill after the tree was cut down for lumber. The specification as Georgia Pine, in addition to being a factual statement, suggests it comes from one of Sherman’s 1864 battle sites, though the specific location is not named. The specification of the dates of the war also suggests it was a good number of years after the fighting.

Bullet-struck pieces of wood were popular battlefield mementos. For veterans they represented the intensity of the fighting, but also a bit of commentary on man’s destruction of nature, nature’s ability to reassert its dominance and perhaps provide a tangible example of the healing or at least covering over of wounds.  [sr][ph:L]
