Offered here is a group of five lead balls of various calibers and a lead powder measure from an English Civil War-era site near Eye, Suffolk, England.

The English Civil War (1642–1651) was a series of armed conflicts fought between the Royalists ("Cavaliers"), who supported King Charles I, and the Parliamentarians ("Roundheads"), who supported Parliament. The war ended with a Parliamentarian victory, the public execution of King Charles I, and the temporary replacement of the monarchy with a republic led by Oliver Cromwell.

The lead balls are of various sizes, but generally in the .52” to .60” range. The powder measure is basically a small cup with two tabs sticking out at the bottom, each with a small hole where it was secured to some form of handle. All recovered from around Eye.

From the collection of author/publisher Dean Thomas. Dean was a bullet collector since the 1960s, had published numerous books on Civil War small arms ammunition, and was working on a book about early “round shot” ammunition when he died in 2023.
